Muggle Monday (19): The New Book

It's time for Muggle Monday, in which I post a quote, a video, or a significant piece of news from the Harry Potter franchise. This is somewhat inspired by the Mundane Monday posts by The Mundie Moms.

But let's be real as to why I made up this meme: I just want the opportunity to post something about Harry Potter.

I haven't been keeping up with this meme because honestly, there hasn't been a whole lot going on that I want to talk about in the HP Universe. Pottermore, a site that I had initially been very excited about, ended up being a disappointment and I never visited it again beyond the first time. Thankfully, the announcement of The New Book has brought me out of this funk, at least briefly:

J.K. Rowling is finally leaving Hogwarts behind — and for decidedly more adult fare, too. Little, Brown Book Group and Little, Brown and Company announced Thursday that Rowling, author of the mega-successful Harry Potter series, is set to publish her first novel for adults.

“Although I’ve enjoyed writing it every bit as much, my next book will be very different to the Harry Potter series, which has been published so brilliantly by Bloomsbury and my other publishers around the world,” Rowling said in a statement. “The freedom to explore new territory is a gift that Harry’s success has brought me, and with that new territory it seemed a logical progression to have a new publisher. I am delighted to have a second publishing home in Little, Brown, and a publishing team that will be a great partner in this new phase of my writing life.”
The title, date and details of the new novel are set to be announced later this year.
“For me, quite simply, it is a personal and professional dream come true to be working with J.K. Rowling,” said David Shelley, publisher of Little, Brown Book Group, in a statement. “She is one of the best storytellers in the world, and I am looking forward enormously to helping bring her new novel for adults to her fans and admirers, and to introducing her writing to new readers the world over.”

A new adult book by Jo that will very different from Harry Potter and will be released later this year? Oh yes, I'm obivously excited! And though I cannot deny that I would DIE to read something else set in the Potter universe, or even something that's still related to the MG/YA fantasy genre like Harry Potter, I do mean it when I say that I would read absolutely anything written by J.K. Rowling.

And though no details about The New Book have been released as of yet, there have been some possible clues as to the genre of The New Book. Jo will be leaving her Potter UK and US publishers, Bloomsbury and Scholastic respectively, for Little, Brown and Company. Her new editor, David Shelley, specializes in crime thrillers, so that is possibly the genre of The New Book.

How about you? Do you have any interest in reading an adult book by J.K. Rowling that is likely going to be a crime thriller, or do you think you will skip it because it's not your genre? Are you like me and would read absolutely anything by J.K. Rowling, even if it was about the history of taxes, or are you a little bit more sane?

    1. I have no doubt I will enjoy it, if only because of my extreme bias towards her.

  2. A) I love that little "New Book" image. Did you make that?? B) I will definitely want to read this one myself - regardless of the genre - and I actually like crime thrillers quite a lot! So that would be fine with me :) Hooray for Muggle Monday!

    1. A) Nope. That's the image that's on her website. It makes it seem like the title is The New Book which is why I've capitalized that throughout this post :) B) I'm not terribly familiar with the crime thriller genre, but from what I've read, I've liked. Just not LOVED.

  3. I'm really curious to see what this new book will be about! I'm equally nervous because how could you possibly live up to the Harry Potter series, but she has such a brilliant imagination that it will no doubt be a fascinating read:) I'm relying on you to keep me updated on this Aylee! ;-)

    1. Think how much pressure she must feel, knowing everyone is expecting she to write brilliance, but also knowing nothing she ever writes again will be anywhere near as popular!

I will do my best to keep you up-to-date, haha!

  4. Ha! The History of Taxes! Oh yeah, that would be fun to read.

Unfortunately, I can't say I'm too excited about a crime thriller, maybe if it was a romantic crime thriller. Still, it's so excited to see Jo explore other genres.

    1. Heh, I knew you'd feel that way. We've never really seen Jo write a romance like the ones you're used to, they're always sort of background romances. But you never know, there may be room for romance in an adult book!

  5. You haven't done one of these in a while!
I'm super excited about this book! I hope I like it, :) and that it's awesome.

Plus, I'm really glad Jo is writing again.

    1. I know, really haven't had much to say! I guess Jo has been writing pretty much nonstop since finishing HP, this is just the first thing she's getting published.

  6. I'm so so excited for her new book and I think it will be interesting to see how it turns out. I've always wondered what she would write after HP because nothing else can top its success. I draw the line at history of taxes though! Unless somehow it's tied into the HP universe and not really about the history of taxes. I didn't know that about the crime thrillers, hmm! Thanks for sharing. :D

    1. I've always wondered too, thinking maybe she might not ever publish anything ever again, or write under a pseudonym. And yeah, I was just joking about the history of taxes. Though I would be interested to see how she could tie that into the HP universe, haha!

  8. I think that to a point I would be like you and read anything that J.K. Rowling wrote! I am so excited to read this new book that everytime I hear mention of it, I have to read the whole article just to make sure there’s no new info about it.

  9. I of course will definitely read it! I would read absolutely anything by J.K. Rowling! Even though I don't usually read adult books, I will make an exception for this :) I had a feeling that it would be a crime thriller, and hearing that her agent is someone who specialises in that genre, it just confirms my suspicions! But then again, who knows? Rowling is always surprising us!

    1. She is pretty much the only author that I would make an exception for when it comes to reading ANYTHING by her. I kind of had a feeling it would be a crime thriller too, and I think it's because she's mentioned it before as a possible-maybe project. But it wouldn't surprise me either if it was something different!

  10. I will try whatever she puts out :)

  11. Pottermore was kind of disappointing, wasn't it? I wonder if they finally opened it up to everyone yet,

Even though her new book isn't HP related, I'm definitely going to read it. She's a fabulous storyteller, so I'm hopeful that her newest book will be wonderful :)

    1. It sure was, though I have heard rumblings or hopefully significant improvements. They're set to open to the public in April, 6 months after they originally said they would open! KInd of ridiculous.

  12. I am ridiculously excited for JK Rowling's new book! Eep! I hope it's fantasy, though it would be interesting to see how she would write something set in the real world. :)

  13. Lol, I found out that Rowling was publishing a new book through Twitter. I barely read adult books and crime thrillers are definitely not my genre, but I'd be up for reading her new book. It's going to be a different experience from Harry Potter for sure.

  16. I've heard the rumor about Rowling writing a mystery too. I hope it is because I love mysteries, especially adult ones. I think it will be fun to read something different from her. I'm sure she's nervous...more than us! As a reader, we can't think she will live up to HP. We have to go into this thinking differently. Would I read anything by her just because it's JK Rowling? We only know one writing style and one series. It's not like she's written tons of books or various series. It's probably good that she waited a long time before publishing a new book. With so many authors crossing genres today, it will be interesting to see how the book does...as far as reviews. She, obviously, wants to continue to write books and stories, not just one series and that's it. So, good for her for continuing to write!

    1. I've always thought Jo was the master of mystery! I swear, I was always completely fooled each and every book. So I dearly hope this crime thriller has some sort of mystery involved!

I'm very proud of her for being so brave and going about publishing another book. I can't imagine the pressure! And of course it will never be as big as HP was, and she knows that. She was born a writer and she's going to continue to do what she was meant to do no matter what!

      Thanks for your comment!
