Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill of Breaking The Spine in which an upcoming, eagerly anticipated release is highlighted on the blog. This week XVI by Julia Karr, coming out January 6, 2011 from Puffin/Speak:
Description (from Goodreads): Nina Oberon's life is pretty normal: she hangs out with her best friend, Sandy, and their crew, goes to school, plays with her little sister, Dee. But Nina is 15. And like all girls she'll receive a Governing Council-ordered tattoo on her 16th birthday. XVI. Those three letters will be branded on her wrist, announcing to all the world -- even the most predatory of men -- that she is ready for sex. Considered easy prey by some, portrayed by the Media as sluts who ask for attacks, becoming a "sex-teen" is Nina's worst fear. That is, until right before her birthday, when Nina's mom is brutally attacked. With her dying breaths, she reveals to Nina a shocking truth about her past -- one that destroys everything Nina thought she knew. Now, alone but for her sister, Nina must try to discover who she really is, all the while staying one step ahead of her mother's killer.
Another Waiting On Wednesday, another dystopian pick (my previous three picks were Matched, Delirium, and Bumped). I've got dystopian on the mind. Judging by the description, XVI is possibly the creepiest one out the bunch. Has anyone picked this one to read for the 2011 Debut Authors Challenge?

ReplyDeleteYou're on a dystopian kick! I am as well and I actually just finished this one and enjoyed it though not quite as much as Delirium or Matched. A very creepy and disturbing world though, and that part was fascinating. Looking forward to seeing what you think of it Aylee! And I love that cover:)

Publication date: December 28, 2010
At a time when most people have grown weary of the war between the states, two young children are desperate to find their way to the battlefields. Jeremy DeGroot wants nothing more than to join a troop as a drummer boy. For Dulcie, a runaway slave, freedom means she must head directly toward the fighting in the hopes that she'll become "contraband," that is, property of the Union troops. Both Jeremy and Dulcie find a place with the 107th New York Volunteer Regiment and even start to forge a friendship. But all that is threatened when they keep crossing paths with the mysterious Charlie, a young Confederate soldier, who may look like the enemy but feels more like a friend.
I've seen a couple reviews posted already on this one and they have been favorable. It sounds really good. A lot of mystery and twists, right up my alley.
ReplyDeleteOnce you get dystopian on your mind, it is hard to shake. I'm looking forward to this one, too!
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree. This one is by far the creepiest. Wow -- this will be a gripping read.
ReplyDeleteSounds really intense, but I really like dystopic books too. I'll add it to my Debut Author Challenge list.

Oh. My. Gosh. This looks so eeriee-good. The cover reminds me of Willow, but the premise? That's just awful!
ReplyDeleteYes, it does sound rather horrific, doesn't it?
