Top Ten Popular Authors I've Never Read

Sarah Dessen - Gayle Forman - Meg Cabot - Shannon Hale - Libba Bray
James Patterson - Agatha Christie - John Green - Judy Blume - Stephen King

BEHOLD MY SHAME. Yes, sadly, it's true. I have not read any books by any of the above authors. It's not that I don't WANT to or that I have any particular reason for staying away. It's just that I... you know... haven't got around to it yet... BUT I do plan on trying out their books someday! I swear it! I am bound to enjoy them at least a little bit if these authors are so popular, right?

So I ask you, are there any authors listed above that I MUST READ right away?? And which of their books should I start with? Advice would be greatly appreciated!

  1. I like Hale's Princess Academy! It's a light read, no romance, middle grade but written really really well. Gayle Forman seems to be really popular too and so many people has the feels for her "Just One Day" series. Libba Bray's "The Diviners" is absolutely wicked as well... I don't think you should bother with James Patterson... I read most of his books and his early ones were entertaining but not the best - they're there for entertainment only imo. Rumors are going around that he uses ghost writers now and it seems that way as his latest books are kinda not good in quality. Stephen King is good but you really need to get used to his style... he has a very unique way of storytelling that even I get migraines sometimes. Haha!

  2. Oh gosh, Aylee! And I thought I was out of the loop! ;) I'm relieved to see that I've read from 8/10 authors shown above. I haven't read from Agatha Christie and Stephen King, but I don't feel too bad because they write adult classics and I'm still a teen. ;D Get on JOHN GREEN first, I'd say! Thanks for sharing, Aylee :)

  3. I actually haven't read anyone on that list! But John Green and Stephen King made mine!

  4. I haven't read any James Patterson either. So you're not alone. :) I love Judy Blume. I'd suggest Iggie's House and Blubber to start with. They're hard to read because of some of the themes, but they're so worth it. And when it comes to Stephen King? I really love Cujo. That's a good start off one.

  5. You didn't read Agatha Christie in school? We read And Then There Were None. The only one on this list I haven't read is Stephen King.

  6. I like the way you put in their pictures but glad that you labeled them. I also have Agatha Christie and Meg Cabot.

  7. I haven't read any Stephen King either. I hope to soon. Especially as my sister is such a big fan of his work! I haven't read quite a few of the authors on your list!

  8. Oh Aylee- haha. I'm kidding. I haven't read Meg Cabot or Stephen King either-they are also found on my list. There are a lot of great authors out there we can't read them all. But you have until June to read TFiOS ;)

  9. John Green! You must, must, must read him :). There are plenty of those that I haven't read too though. There isn't enough time to read everything!

    My TTT :)

  10. I think you should totally start with Gayle Forman because I loved her books the most. John Green is a good option, so is Meg Cabot. The rest? Well, I haven't read them either. Ha ha. ^.^

  11. John Green!! You gotta read John Green either Looking for Alaska or The Fault in Our Stars. Two of his best but really I love anything by him. Gayle Forman's If I Stay is fantastic if you like realistic fiction and same with Sarah Dessen especially if you're in the mood for a nice contemporary romance with some depth to it. Libba Bray is also fantastic and incredibly witty but I've yet to read The Diviners. Judy Blume is a classic too. I just read my first Agatha Christie book last year, And There Were None, so don't feel too bad about that. I struck out with Cabot, King, and Patterson- just not my thing.

  12. The only one of these I've read is Agatha Christie, back in high school, and I wasn't impressed, lol. Nice list! @Get Lost in Lit

  13. I've been seeing a lot of Agatha Christie today! I included her too. I've also never read Stephen King. I've only just warmed up to the horror genre. Great list!

  14. I've never read most of these authors either Aylee! *high five* The only reason I have read Stephen King is because I had to write a 20-page paper on The Shining as my final high school English project. I scare really easily, so his books are not for me! Though I did enjoy The Shining, mostly because I had to approach it from a more analytical angle for the paper, so it took some of the terror out of it:)

  15. I do not read YA much but John Green's Fault in Stars was emotionally magical, very memorable I definitely would read that. Agatha Christie is great, And Then There Were None and her Christmas Poiret is great.

  16. I haven't read James Patterson either. I've only read Misery by Stephen King too, because a friend in high school lent me her copy. I've never read Judy Blume either! At least I'm not the only one.

I really like Agatha Christie. I'm trying to read more by her these days...I also think And Then There Were None is a nice play to start.

  17. Good list, I really love John Green and Meg Cabot books and I would really like to read Libba Bray's books someday.

  18. I loooove Aggie and you must try Hale. :)

  19. John Green! Anything he wrote. And Stephen King's The Stand is my favorite book of all time. Sarah Dessen writes fantastic contemp YA. I am a fan.

  20. Ooh if I was voting for order, I would say Stephen King, John Green, Libba Bray and Gayle Forman. But these are all fantastic, and you can't go wrong with them. Can't wait to hear what you think of their books when you read them! :-)

  21. John Green first. TFiOS is awesome, but I'd say start with one of his earlier books like Paper Towns, or Looking for Alaska. Save Sarah Dessen for the summer and start with This Lullaby or Just Listen. My favorite Agatha Christie is And Then There Were None. It reminds me of my favorite board game, Clue. Meg Cabot's Heather Wells series is fun.

  22. Oh I've only read 3 on that list but I'll say, PATTERSON! Women's Murder Club especially. If you like crime. I haven't read Green either, the shame.

  23. I haven't read anything by Shannon Hale and John Green (and some other authors on this list) either! But, how have you not read any of Meg Cabot's or Sarah Dessen's books?! For Gayle Forman, I liked If I Stay/Where She Went ... not so much Just One Day.

  24. Other than the first three of your list, I think we are pretty much the same, lol.
I've tried Green before but got bored so I never finished any of his books -or made it very far.

I like early Meg Cabot and Early Sarah Dessen the best :D

  25. Well, I read The Moon and More by Sarah Dessen and it was nothing extraordinary for me, so since then, I haven't read anything else by the author. Now Gayle Forman is one author whose books If I Stay and Where She Went blew me away with their powerful emotions. Meg Cabot has been my friend since my teen years and she never disappoints. But what is this I'm reading, Aylee? No John Green? Well, you must read The Fault in Our Stars before the movie is out. You won't regret it. As for Agatha Christie, I've never read the author's books either but I've been told too. The other authors remain unread for me as well. Great list and I hope you can read at some of the author's books and I would command you read Green, if I may!

  26. Ooh, Aylee you must read a Cabot book asap!

I read a few of the books in Patterson's Maximum Ride series when I was younger, but I lost interest after like 4th book or something. I've heard good things about his adult titles, though.

I''m not really into contemporary books, so I'm not sure If I'll ever read a book by Sarah Dessen.

I haven't read anything by King either. I love Under the Dome (the TV show), so maybe when the show is finished I will pick up the book.

I've tried reading books by JG, but they're not really my cup of tea. I did, however, enjoy TFiOS.

  27. I haven’t read any Judy Blume either!! And I’m too much of a wuss to read Stephen King. My favorite book of Shannon Hale’s is Book of a Thousand Days. It was a very unique fairy tale retelling.

  28. LOL oh man, I have not read a single one of these authors either! Yay, you're not alone in your shame any longer! >.< In all seriousness though, I truly do want to read something by most of these guys, especially Agatha Christie (!!) Shannon Hale, Judy Blume, John Green, and Stephen King. I still need to read Libba Bay but at least in her case, I own a copy of The Diviners...now if I can just find the courage to crack open the beast I'll be good.

Hopefully you can get to read books by all of these authors soon :)

  29. Wow! No Judy Blume? Did you even like to read as a youngster? I loved Fudgie and The Tales of the Forth Grade Nothing. What a great series.

  30. I don't know why, but I always felt like you were a John Green fan....probably because most of the big "nerdfighters" that I know in person are also mega Harry Potter fans! :P

Seriously though, I haven't read anything by Gayle Forman, Shannon Hale, Libba Bray, James Patterson, Agatha Christie, or Steven King either, so you're not alone. ;) But, I have read Sarah Dessen, John Green, and Judy Blume, and loved books by them all! For Sarah Dessen, I recommend "Lock & Key", "Just Listen", and "The Truth About Forever" (MY PERSONAL FAVE OF HERS!!!). For John Green, my fave that I've read so far has been "Will Grayson, Will Grayson", which he co-wrote with David Levithan...and it's AMAZING! And for Judy Blume, I actually really wasn't a big fan of "Forever", but "Are You There God, It's Me Margaret?" will always be one of my favourites. It's a great story about friendship, puberty, and just growing up period (haha unintentional pun, but so, so fitting! :P). I totally recommend it though. It's still one of my favourites to reread. :)

  31. Sarah Dessen!! Meg Cabot?! I'd highly recommend The Truth About Forever from Dessen (very fun characters) and the Mediator series from Cabot (also fun characters, plus a hot ghost). John Green's The Fault in our Stars is fabulous, too!

I'm with you on Shannon Hale, James Patterson, Agatha Christie, and Judy Blume (I'm relieved that I'm not the only non-Judy Blume reader. I feel like everyone has read at least one of her books)!

  32. OH MY GOD LOL That's quite a few, I really hope you get around to them some time though. I've read Gayle Forman, Sarah Dessen, John Green, and a bit of James Patterson. Although the first 3 are, in my opinion, better ;)
