This week, I've chosen to feature a few picks from the Hachette Fall 2014 Catalog:

Sixteen-year-old Avery Roe wants only to take her rightful place as the witch of Prince Island, making the charms that keep the island's whalers safe at sea, but her mother has forced her into a magic-free world of proper manners and respectability. When Avery dreams she's to be murdered, she knows time is running out to unlock her magic and save herself.
Avery finds an unexpected ally in a tattooed harpoon boy named Tane--a sailor with magic of his own, who moves Avery in ways she never expected. Becoming a witch might stop her murder and save her island from ruin, but Avery discovers her magic requires a sacrifice she never prepared for.

There ain't no way I could ever resist a historical fantasy! Salt & Storm is exactly my kind of read. I will say I have read a few early reviews for this one that are less than positive, but I'm going to keep my mind open going into this one and I hope I enjoy it!
Graduating from high school is a time of limitless possibilities—but not for Glory, who has no plan for what's next. Her mother committed suicide when Glory was only four years old, and she’s never stopped wondering if she will eventually go the same way...until a transformative night when she begins to experience an astonishing new power to see a person’s infinite past and future. From ancient ancestors to many generations forward, Glory is bombarded with visions—and what she sees ahead of her is terrifying.
A tyrannical new leader raises an army. Women’s rights disappear. A violent second civil war breaks out. And young girls vanish daily, sold off or interned in camps. Glory makes it her mission to record everything she sees, hoping her notes will somehow make a difference. She may not see a future for herself, but she’ll do everything in her power to make sure this one doesn’t come to pass.

Glory O'Brien's History of the Future has one original premise! I like the idea of a girl setting out to change the future after she has a terrifying vision, even if she's not part of it. And I always hear amazing things about A.S. King so I'd really love to try out one of her novels at some point!

Class is back in session...
Sophronia continues her second year at finishing school in style--with a steel-bladed fan secreted in the folds of her ball gown, of course. Such a fashionable choice of weapon comes in handy when Sophronia, her best friend Dimity, sweet sootie Soap, and the charming Lord Felix Mersey stowaway on a train to return their classmate Sidheag to her werewolf pack in Scotland. No one suspected what--or who--they would find aboard that suspiciously empty train. Sophronia uncovers a plot that threatens to throw all of London into chaos and she must decide where her loyalties lie, once and for all.

Rejoice, Sophronia and her band of lady-spies-in-training are back! This series is all kinds of fun and I am in love with Gail Carriger's whimsical style. Can't wait to return to The Finishing School Series with book #3, Waistcoats & Weaponry!
There are three rules in the Walled City: Run fast. Trust no one. Always carry your knife. Right now, my life depends completely on the first. Run, run, run.
Jin, Mei Yee, and Dai all live in the Walled City, a lawless labyrinth run by crime lords and overrun by street gangs. Teens there run drugs or work in brothels—or, like Jin, hide under the radar. But when Dai offers Jin a chance to find her lost sister, Mei Yee, she begins a breathtaking race against the clock to escape the Walled City itself.

First, it has to be said that I am in love with the typography and the subtle graphic background of this cover. Second, I'm always keen on seeing diverse characters in YA! And third, The Walled City just sounds damn good and I really cannot wait to get my hands on it!
How about you? Are you waiting on any of these Hachette Fall 2014 reads? Are there any upcoming books from the Hachette Fall 2014 Catalog that I didn't include here that you feel I should add to my list?
I'm reading SALT & STORM this month and I am EXCITED! It just sounds so good! Great pick!
ReplyDeleteRachel @ Beauty and the Bookshelf
I can't wait to read ALL of these, but the one I'm most excited for is Waistcoats & Weaponry!! First two books were so fun!
ReplyDeleteSo many great books coming out, so little time...
ReplyDeleteGreat picks!
My WoW
Salt and Storm didn't really work for me :(, but The Walled City is one I'm anticipating and hopefully won't be let down by. :)
ReplyDeleteAww, I really hope it works for me even still! But I am worried a bit that it won't...
DeleteReally awesome picks! Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Hump Day!

Great picks! Salt & Storm and The Walled City sound really good, I'll try to get arcs after I read a few more arcs I already have. I'm so excited for Waistcoats & Weaponry, I love this series!! Haven't heard about Glory O'Brien's History before, I check it out!
ReplyDeleteMy WoW
OMG I loved Salt & Storm! Definitely great pick!
ReplyDeleteGreat picks, of them The Walled City draws me the most :D
ReplyDeleteMy WoW
I LOVE that cover for The Walled City. I think we have something different here in the UK, but I already know I want this one. The typography is stunning. :) I'm also excited about Salt & Storm, though I haven't actually read any of the early reviews yet. I know Elizabeth Fama liked it so I'm going to keep my fingers crossed! Great picks, Aylee. :)
ReplyDeleteRight?? It's truly a breathtaking cover. And I didn't know that Elizabeth Fama had liked Salt & Storm!
DeleteI heart the Waistcoats cover!
ReplyDeleteEeep! I actually have eARCs of SALT & STORM and THE WALLED CITY, so I'll definitely be diving into those soon. I loooove the cover for W&W! So gorgeous, I really need to get started on that series. I also really need to read something by A.S.King. The concept of her new book sounds really fascinating! I hope you get to read these soon, Aylee!
ReplyDeleteAwesome, can't wait to hear what you think of them! I also REALLY need to read something by A.S. King!
DeleteI haven't read Etiquette and Espionage, but I am happy to see the series is still going with it's lovely titles and fancy covers. I read a bit of it and wasn't sure, but I think I'm definitely going to give it the 50 page trial next time I have reading space, and then see what I make of it.
ReplyDeleteOh, I do hope you give it a chance because I don't think you will find it lacking! It's utterly charming!!
DeleteCannot wait for Waistcoats & Weaponry
ReplyDeleteMissie @ A Flurry of Ponderings
Glory O'Brien's History of the Future by A.S. King sounds good. I haven't read anything by King yet either, though I think I own her debut. LOL I need to get on that; I've heard good things too. And The Walled City has such a funky cool cover.
ReplyDeleteI picked up her debut at a used book store as well! So I really have no excuse.
DeleteYay for Salt & Storm! I am so excited about this title like crazy. I love witches and I love historical fantasy so although I've read some not-so-good reviews but I'm still super stoked for this one.
ReplyDeleteOMGG..Glory O'Brien's History of the Future sounds awesome! I wonder if it'll be an epistolary novel? I would definitely love this, if that's the case. I've yet to read any A.S. King's novels too so I might start with this one.
I've yet to start this series by Gail Carriger but I love spy girls. That's why I love Ally Carter!
I want to read The Walled City so bad too! Until Netgalley dashed all my hopes of reading it early. XD So I really have to wait until November. Sigh.
Lovely picks, Aylee!
Yes, excited like crazy is a good way of putting it!!
DeleteI wonder that as well! Epistolary novels can be pretty hit or miss so we'll have to see...
Yeah, it has a lot of elements of Ally Carter, actually!
Aww, too bad!
Thanks, Sarah!
Ryan Graudin's All That Glows was only okay so I'm going to wait for reviews of The Walled City before adding it to my wishlist. Salt and Storm however is already on it so it's disappointing to hear that early reviews (which I haven't read at all) for it have not been very favourable.
ReplyDeleteKing's novel isn't one I've heard of but I love its premise. Definitely adding that one to my wishlist too, Aylee!
Oh, I had forgotten that you have already read one of Ryan Graudin's books. That's too bad, hopefully his next book is better!
DeleteI've read The Walled City it was wonderful. I'm looking forward to Salt & Storm and Glory O'Brien's History of the Future!
ReplyDeleteOh yay that's exciting!!

ReplyDeleteThese all sound amazing! I have Salt & Storm and I cannot wait to read it next month! Look at that cover! As for the others, they all sound really good. I need to get on reading something by A.S. King and I've been meaning to start The Finishing School series. I've heard such good things! Great post, Aylee! :D
ReplyDeleteWoo, I'm excited that you want to read Etiquette & Espionage! It totally charmed me so I'm hoping it will do the same with you.
DeleteYay :D Awesome choices sweetie. <3 Thank you for sharing. Today was the first time I read about Salt & Storm. Now I want it too, lol. Hoping it will be good :) Hope you'll love all three books. <3
ReplyDeleteSalt & Storm sounds like a book I will really enjoy :D And when I hear things like 'witches' and 'magic' I'm hooked. The Walled city sounds great too, with the labyrinth and awesome character names.
ReplyDeleteYup, that's all I need to hear to be hooked too!
DeleteI really want to read the Walled City, Salt & Storm, and Waistcoats and Weaponry. Basically Walled City just sounds awesome and I need it now. Salt & Storm just seems like my kind of book and I need more books about witches in my life. And Waistcoats and Weaponry will hopefully be an amazing sequel and will be even better than the first. I think that this series will be a lot like Harry Potter and will just continue to get better and better and the series progresses and the characters mature.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think so as well about the Finishing School Series! I can already see the characters maturing and I do see the series getting better and better.
DeleteSalt & Storm, and The Walled City are both on my to-read list, too! I can't wait for them both!! They sound super intense and amazing!!! :D
ReplyDeleteI still haven't read anything by A.S. King, but I've heard so many good things that I might just have to finally read one of their books! :D And I really need to get caught up with Gail Carriger's Finishing School series...especially since I have the first one, and you gave me the second. :P haha
Great picks, Eilidh! :D
Well you sure do have many books you are waiting for. I can't wait for Salt & Storm to be released but mostly for Trial of Fire. Nice picks! :D
ReplyDeleteLola @ Hit or Miss Books
Geesh, I still haven't read the second Finishing School book and already there's another one? I have to admit, that's probably my least favourite cover in the series. The first book's was so strong and this one ... meh.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. But I still think the covers compliment each other really well.
DeleteSalt & Storm is one that I am very eagerly anticipating :D Although it IS disheartening that the reviews you've seen are less than positive, I will hold out hope, till I crack it open and see for myself! This is my first time hearing about Glory O'Brien but I have heard wonderful things about A.S. King...and this one sounds like a story I could see getting into! So thanks for bringing that one to my attention :) When I first saw the cover for W&W, I immediately thought of you! I still need to get into my copies of books 1 & 2 but I'm excited xD The Walled City is another one I can't wait to dig into, I hope it lives up to our expectations as well! Wonderful picks Aylee xx
ReplyDeleteIt's always disheartening when you see poor early reviews, but I swear I'm going to do my best not to let it affect me! It's so much better when you go into something with an open mind and form your own opinions.
DeleteI am so excited for Glory O'Brien's History of the Future! I've started reading AS King's books, and her writing style is so unique and memorable.
ReplyDeleteAwesome WOW choices :)
I just started reading The Walled City, it's definitely a gritty read and one that I am not sure how much I want to continue with despite liking it, I am having internal anxiety attacks over the characters. I definitely like the sound of Salt & Storm and will be adding it to my wishlist. Great picks.
ReplyDeleteHmm, makes me wonder what I would think of it then. I'd be curious to hear your review even if you don't end up continuing!
