Waiting On Wednesday: Random House Spring 2015 Catalog

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill of Breaking The Spine in which upcoming, eagerly anticipated releases are highlighted on the blog.

This week, I've chosen to feature a few picks from the Random House Spring 2015 Catalog:

Denton Little's Deathdate by Lance Rubin
Date: April 14, 2015
Add to Goodreads

Denton Little's Deathdate takes place in a world exactly like our own except that everyone knows the day they will die. For 17-year-old Denton Little, that's tomorrow, the day of his senior prom.
Despite his early deathdate, Denton has always wanted to live a normal life, but his final days are filled with dramatic firsts. First hangover. First sex. First love triangle (as the first sex seems to have happened not with his adoring girlfriend, but with his best friend's hostile sister. Though he's not totally sure. See: first hangover.) His anxiety builds when he discovers a strange purple rash making its way up his body. Is this what will kill him? And then a strange man shows up at his funeral, claiming to have known Denton's long-deceased mother, and warning him to beware of suspicious government characters…. Suddenly Denton's life is filled with mysterious questions and precious little time to find the answers.

A world where you know the exact date you will die? Yikes. That is something that is definitely NOT on my need-to-know list. But still, I'm very much (morbidly) intrigued with this premise of Denton Little's Deathdate.

The Girl at Midnight by Melissa Grey
Date: April 28, 2015

Beneath the streets of New York City live the Avicen, an ancient race of people with feathers for hair and magic running through their veins. Age-old enchantments keep them hidden from humans. All but one. Echo is a runaway pickpocket who survives by selling stolen treasures on the black market, and the Avicen are the only family she's ever known.
Echo is clever and daring, and at times she can be brash, but above all else she's fiercely loyal. So when a centuries-old war crests on the borders of her home, she decides it's time to act.
Legend has it that there is a way to end the conflict once and for all: find the Firebird, a mythical entity believed to possess power the likes of which the world has never seen. It will be no easy task, but if life as a thief has taught Echo anything, it's how to hunt down what she wants . . . and how to take it.
But some jobs aren't as straightforward as they seem. And this one might just set the world on fire.

Ooooh, this new fantasy sounds SO promising! I'm so very curious about this ancient magical race of people living below New York City and what this centuries-old war entails. I have high hopes for The Girl at Midnight!

5 To 1 by Holly Bodger

In the year 2054, after decades of gender selection, India now has a ratio of five boys for every girl, making women an incredibly valuable commodity. Tired of marrying off their daughters to the highest bidder and determined to finally make marriage fair, the women who form the country of Koyanagar have instituted a series of tests so that every boy has the chance to win a wife.

Sudasa, though, doesn't want to be a wife, and Kiran, a boy forced to compete in the test to become her husband, has other plans as well. As the tests advance, Sudasa and Kiran thwart each other at every turn until they slowly realize that they just might want the same thing.

So in love with this gorgeous cover!! But more importantly, I have not ever read a book with a premise like this one and to say that I am intrigued is a definite understatement. I'm looking forward to reading some early reviews to see what 5 To 1 is all about!

How about you? Are you waiting on any of these Random House Spring 2015 reads? Are there any upcoming books from the Random House Spring 2015 Catalog that I didn't include here that you feel I should add to my list?

Does anyone have a link to this Spring Catalog? I did some googling around but couldn't find the one featuring these books.

  15. The Girl at Midnight was REALLY good and it reminded me of both Daughter of Smoke and Bone and City of Bones! Real nice. The first book you showcased, hmm, NetGalley approved me and then denied me. It was really weird :/

  16. I love the sound from The girl at midnight; ancient race, clever and daring; I am up for it.
5 to 1 has a really interesting promise and I will keep an eye out for early reviews. I am curious to see how it turns out.

  17. Denton's Little Deathdate sounds kind of fun. I would NOT want to know the day I would die. How nerve-wracking if it was soon!

  18. I'm really looking forward to The Girl at Midnight. This is the first time I've heard about 5 to 1 though and it sounds interesting. I'm going to wait for the reviews of it to come out first before deciding whether I should give it a try.

  19. Gahh, I always dread reading your WoW posts because I just KNOW I'm going to be adding on to my staggering tbr pile! ;) (Kidding, I love that you feature so many good books; I know you've got great taste!)

Denton Little's Deathdate sounds so cool and so original. I know, I wouldn't want to know my deathdate either, but I'm still morbidly fascinated with the plot here. Especially since it sounds so jam-packed with mystery and teenage action. Can't say I'm a huge fan of the cover, though, hehe.

And whoa, The Girl at Midnight -- "the Avicen, an ancient race of people with feathers for hair and magic running through their veins." -- I don't know why, but this line here makes me really freaking excited. Apart from that, the book doesn't sound all the original, but still. People with feathers for hair. Hard to pass that up. :P

I think out of the three here, I'm looking forward to 5 To 1 the most! I love that it's set in India (you don't get many books set in different countries these days), and that it sort of puts the twist to the usual dystopian, test-taking world. Like you said, I haven't read a book with such an intriguing premise, and it's a little early to say, but I have a feeling that I'll be shipping Sudasa and Kiran hard. ;) And YES, the cover is gorgeous!

    Awesome picks as usual, girl!

    1. Heehee!! Thanks, Megan :D:D I agree with your assessments here of course!! I think I'm most looking forward to 5 To 1 too, though I'm really holding out until I read reviews for all three of them before making my decision whether I will read any of these. Fingers crossed that they all prove to be original reads!

  20. The Girl at Midnight sounds so good! I can’t wait to read reviews of that, and read it myself! It sounds seriously good- I mean, feathers for hair!? I love the idea of that. It just hints at so much more the plot will have to offer! Excitement, excitement!
And 5 to 1 sounds interesting, though I’ll hold off deciding whether I want to read it until I’ve read reviews, too- it could be brilliant, but I do have a feeling those two characters will end up falling in love anyway, which might not be against the point but it does sound a bit predictable. Great choices to feature, Aylee! Xx
