It's time for Muggle Monday, in which I highlight a significant piece of news from the Harry Potter franchise. This is somewhat inspired by the Mundane Monday posts by The Mundie Moms.
But let's be real as to why I made up this feature: I just want the opportunity to post something about Harry Potter.
Scholastic (US publisher) has already had their Harry Potter makeovers by artist Kazu Kabuishi (see them here, here, and here), so now it's UK Publisher, Bloomsbury's turn, with art by Jonny Duddle!
This new edition will be published September 1, 2014 in both hardback and paperback, along with the other six newly redesigned covers for the rest of the series. Along with the new artwork, this edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone will also feature highlights from J.K. Rowling's writings from Pottermore. This is a separate edition from the fully illustrated version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone that will be published by Bloomsbury and Pottermore in autumn 2015, which will feature the illustrations by the insanely talented Jim Kay (the illustrator of A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness).
As for the artwork above, I like it! I think I still like Scholastic's redesign a bit more though. I love that Bloomsbury has finally come up with a special title font for the series, akin to Scholastic's unique title font. The cover has a very child-like whimsical feel to it that I think suits the first book perfectly. I do hope that they plan to take the cover art in a darker, more mature direction in future books, however. Thoughts?

My reaction is exactly the same. I like the childish look for the first book. And probably the second too. But starting with the third and definitely with the fourth, it is no longer a children's book series. I would hope the covers reflect that.
ReplyDeleteAnother cover edition I want to have, haha. They keep making the books more and more appealing. I really want these editions for the extra Pottermore information and the other ones from Scholastic for the design :p
ReplyDeleteThe look is definitely childish, but like you said - it works for the first book. It's not my favourite out of all the covers, but I do like the whimsical feel and the dark, rich colours.
ReplyDeleteI think it's cute :) I like that this new edition will have Pottermore excerpts in it as well. That's pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteIt's gorgeous. Truly.
ReplyDeleteI think I like Scholastic better.
ReplyDeleteThis is cute and all -and I agree about the font - but I guess I just got used to the other artwork. Hopefully this art will progress as the books did, that would be pretty cool and I'm very intrigued as to how they would do that.
Aw, cute! I like it too, but I agree, it should definitely get more darker and "mature" as the series continues. I'm excited about all these new covers, etc. except I just want them all!!
ReplyDeleteAwww! I definitely like this cover! It's adorable, and I'm sure they'll have the later books get a bit darker! They'll probably keep the childlike art and just have the content get a bit darker...we'll have to see to be sure though! And I definitely can't wait to see the other six covers! Thanks for sharing, Eilidh! :D
ReplyDeleteOmg...I have to buy that. That's it! The UK always has cool covers. Btw...love your new look which probably isn't so new to you, but is to me. LOL
ReplyDeleteI definitely still like the original. This one is cute, and a little bit more children and middle grade reader inspired, but it's different and it's nice!
ReplyDeleteI really like the innocence of this cover too! Harry's face/expression is super cute!! I agree with you though: I hope that the covers for the later books will reflect the growing darkness they contain. I think it's super cool that they're adding the extra info JKR wrote for PotterMore - it's a way to get all the info in one package...kind of like the Encyclopedia was going to be *sniffle*
ReplyDeleteI think I like the Scolastic ones better but I'm still excited about these ones :D
I like this cover, but I prefer the scholastic covers. I am excited about all the new covers coming out- I like that they are appealing to the new generation of HP lovers.
