This week, I've chosen to feature a few picks from the HarperCollins Winter 2014 Catalog:
Wren Caswell is average. Ranked in the middle of her class at Sacred Heart, she’s not popular, but not a social misfit. Wren is the quiet, “good” girl who's always done what she's supposed to—only now in her junior year, this passive strategy is backfiring. She wants to change, but doesn’t know how.
Grayson Barrett was the king of St. Gabe’s. Star of the lacrosse team, top of his class, on a fast track to a brilliant future—until he was expelled for being a “term paper pimp.” Now Gray is in a downward spiral and needs to change, but doesn’t know how.
One fateful night their paths cross when Wren, working at her family’s Arthurian-themed catering hall, performs the Heimlich on Gray as he chokes on a cocktail weenie, saving his life literally and figuratively. What follows is the complicated, awkward, hilarious, and tender tale of two teens shedding their pasts, figuring out who they are—and falling in love.

I admit my interest in The Promise of Amazing has a lot to do with that seriously cute cover. I can't help it. Contemporary romance isn't even a genre that I am normally drawn to, but I would give this one a go because of the cuteness of the cover.
Small towns are nothing if not friendly. Friendship, Wisconsin (population: 688) is no different. Around here, everyone wears a smile. And no one ever locks their doors. Until, that is, high school sweetheart Ruth Fried is found murdered. Strung up like a scarecrow in the middle of a cornfield.
Unfortunately, Friendship’s police are more adept at looking for lost pets than catching killers. So Ruth’s best friend, Kippy Bushman, armed with only her tenacious Midwestern spirit and Ruth’s secret diary (which Ruth’s mother had asked her to read in order to redact any, you know, sex parts), sets out to find the murderer. But in a quiet town like Friendship—where no one is a suspect—anyone could be the killer.

I'm such a sucker for murder mysteries. They just suck me right in. I love trying to guess the murderer, but am always disappointed when it's too easy a solution. I hope No One Else Can Have You keeps me guessing right to the end!
The Scarlet Letter meets Minority Report in bestselling author Sophie Jordan's chilling new novel about a teenage girl who is ostracized when her genetic test proves she's destined to become a murderer.
When Davy Hamilton's tests come back positive for Homicidal Tendency Syndrome (HTS)-aka the kill gene-she loses everything. Her boyfriend ditches her, her parents are scared of her, and she can forget about her bright future at Juilliard. Davy doesn't feel any different, but genes don't lie. One day she will kill someone.
Only Sean, a fellow HTS carrier, can relate to her new life. Davy wants to trust him; maybe he's not as dangerous as he seems. Or maybe Davy is just as deadly.

A girl who becomes ostracized when a genetic test proves she's destined to become a murderer? Oh yes, that is one intriguing premise! I am SO curious about Uninvited and I hope the story lives up to my high expectations!
When Ileni lost her magic, she lost everything: her place in society, her purpose in life, and the man she had expected to spend her life with. So when the Elders sent her to be magic tutor to a secret sect of assassins, she went willingly, even though the last two tutors had died under mysterious circumstances.
But beneath the assassins’ caves, Ileni will discover a new place and a new purpose… and a new and dangerous love. She will struggle to keep her lost magic a secret while teaching it to her deadly students, and to find out what happened to the two tutors who preceded her. But what she discovers will change not only her future, but the future of her people, the assassins… and possibly the entire world.

How about you? Are you waiting on any of these HarperCollins Winter 2014 reads? Are there any upcoming books from the HarperCollins Winter 2014 Catalog that I didn't include here that you feel I should add to my list?
I'm super intrigued by No One Else Can Have You! I am a fan of murder mystery as well :) Death Sworn sounds AWESOME too, especially since fantasy is my favorite genre, it seems like I'm gonna enjoy this book. I'm not so sure about Sophie Jordan's new book cause I didn't like her Firelight series but let's just hope this one will be better :)
ReplyDeleteDeath Sworn looks amazing! And I'm also intrigued by The Promise of Amazing :) I've gotten into contemporary romance a little more this year... as long as it's swoonworthy and cute, and not tragic hehe. Totally agree about the cover :) And I love your blog redesign!! It's very awesome!
ReplyDeleteI love the cover for No one else can Have You, and it sounds good!!
ReplyDeleteThe Promise of Amazing looks promising, too.
Nice picks :D

I already added The Promise of Amazing to my TBR list. I really want to read that book as well. I haven't heard of any of these other books yet, but a couple of them sound interesting. I will have to read some reviews. Great picks!!

I am so excited for The Promise of Amazing- I can't wait for it. The second pick you have up there looks great too and so do the rest. I hope you get to read them all and enjoy them!
ReplyDeleteSarika @ The Readdicts
I am SO over the moon about the summary of Sophie Jordan's book. It sounds like a completely different twist on the genetic-apocalypse book we've seen so much of.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!!
Most of these are on my list too. Hope you get to read it soon!

These all sound great, but The Promise of Amazing and Uninvited definitely caught my eye. Will check these out! :D Thanks for sharing! :)

Uninvited looks like something I would definitely read.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing (:
Check out my WoW!
Death sworn, I LOVE the cover and blurb :D
ReplyDeleteGood stuff. I like that first cover. It's so cute. Darling really.
ReplyDeleteI don't usually read much fantasy but I really like the sound of Death Sworn! Great picks. :)
ReplyDeleteBonnie @ For the Love of Words
I love the fact that you shared some of the best upcoming Harpers titles! :D I've read two out of the four, and I think you'll definitely enjoy all of them!!

Death Sworn sounds exactly like my sort of read too, but I think I might wait to see how it's received first. I ended up DNFing Leah Cypress's debut book, so I'm worried that I might still have issues with her writing. Hopefully not though! :) I also really like the sound of Uninvited. I'm looking forward to seeing what you think of all of these!
ReplyDeleteI loved Mistwood so I'm really looking forward to Death Sworn, Aylee. I'm curious to see if I'll like Uninvited because I was not a fan of Jordan's Firelight.
ReplyDeleteThese four are ALL on my list! :D I'm especially excited for Uninvited! I just loved Sophie's Firelight trilogy. :D Harper Collins has a fantastic lineup coming up...and I definitely can't wait for these! Thanks for sharing, Eilidh! :D
ReplyDeleteI'm really excited for all of these, but especially No One Else. I love Harper Teen. I'm coveting pretty much their entire catalog. Great picks!
ReplyDeleteNatflix&Books' WoW
I REALLY want to read No One Else Can Have You. I love murder mysteries (I tend to never guess the culprit either) and this one sounds really interesting.
ReplyDeleteDeath Sworn looks so good! I love the cover. But more importantly I think assassins and magic sounds like an awesome book. I can't get enough fantasy! I'm going to keep my eye out for that one. :)
ReplyDeleteHarper has been coming up with so many amazing-sounding books lately, and their covers. THEIR COVERS. So beautiful! The book I'm most looking forward to is UNINVITED, because I was a huge fan of MINORITY REPORT (the film; I haven't read the book yet), and it has such a cool premise, albeit a little bit unoriginal. I hope something really unexpected happens in the book -- like the protagonist turns out to be an actual murderer, instead of toppling the whole government -- but I'm up for whatever Sophie Jordan has in store for us.
ReplyDeleteAnd DEATH SWORN sounds incredible as well! Brilliant choices, Aylee. :D
These all look fantastic! I agree, I was totally sucked in by The Promise of Amazing's cover, and I love murder mysteries, so No One Else Can Have You is calling to me. Death Sworn is probably the book I'm most excited about though! It just seems like my kind of read. :-) Great WoW choices, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteNo One Else Can Have you looks so cool. I love that cover! I'm definitely adding it to my TBR now :) Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDelete-Jessica (Peace Love Books)
Lots of great-looking books in this WoW. I think I'm most excited for No One Else Can Have You.
ReplyDeleteGawd, I can't even believe how excited I am for Death Sworn too - and, like you, I am hoping it will be as good as it sounds (and looks!) ♥ Uninvited is another one that I'm getting more into, the more I see it/read about it!
ReplyDeleteI'd never heard of No One Else Can Have You but you've definitely piqued my curiosity, I love a good murder-mystery too :) Oh and The Promise of Amazing does have a pretty sweet cover! Definitely not my genre though so I'll wait to read your review before I add it to my TBR hehe Wonderful picks as usual Aylee ^^
Death Sworn seems like something which I could really appreciate. I'm totally enjoying the assassin stories I've read lately. I hope this one is something I can add to my list of likes.
