Muggle Monday: Newly Redesigned Harry Potter Covers!

It's time for Muggle Monday, in which I highlight a significant piece of news from the Harry Potter franchise. This is somewhat inspired by the Mundane Monday posts by The Mundie Moms.

But let's be real as to why I made up this feature: I just want the opportunity to post something about Harry Potter.

There have been a whole ton of new Harry Potter cover redesign releases recently and I am LOVING it (obviously). And no, I don't think these redesigns will ever replace the originals in my mind, but it's still cool to see the covers in a new light:

New 15th Anniversary US Editions of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire:

J'ADORE! I love these covers as much as the first two Kazu Kibuishi covers for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I love the animation and the attention to detail. I think they've done an excellent job so far at choosing the perfect scene to represent each book for the new covers. I also love how you can see Past Harry collapsed in the background of the new Prisoner of Azkaban cover. The new Goblet of Fire cover is pretty fantastic, too, though in my mind I still picture the Hungarian Horntail resembling the one from the UK/Canada Children's Edition, rather than this version.

I honestly couldn't say which of the four new US Edition covers I like best so far. Does anyone else have a favourite one so far?

EDITED TO ADD - New Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Also Released:

Of course, only a few hours after I had this post scheduled, the 15th Anniversary US Edition of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was released! And of course, it's GORGEOUS:

New UK Adult Editions of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chamber of Secrets, and Prisoner of Azkaban:

The UK Adult Editions of the books are also getting a makeover. The first three books have been redone and the next four are set to be released in the coming months. I love the woodcut style of these! They are very bright and graphic and eye-catching. Sigh, if only I were rich, I would buy ALL the editions of the books, new and old, domestic and foreign editions. And they would be my pretties.

What do you think of these new Harry Potter covers? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I LOVE the new editions. But not the UK ones. Those are too dull to me.

    1. Hmm, yeah the Adult editions are always duller than the children's. Because Adults like book with dull covers, apparently.

  2. Oooooooo I LOVE the new Prisoner of Azkaban cover! I think it's all the blues and the the stunning white stag in the middle of all the Dementors (sp?). I'm not sure about the UK covers. I like them, but I think I like the US ones much better, they just fit the feel of the books. The UK ones are almost too bold, but still really pretty.

    1. I definitely like the US covers better, yes. But that's because I generally like the Children's covers better than the Adult ones.

  3. I am IN LOVE with these redesigns. The illustrations are so pretty! (The Chamber of Secrets is my favorite, though it's my least favorite book lol.) The UK Adult versions though, hmmm. There is something about them. But they're definitely too bright for me. I don't think they match the series very well. Excited for the final two!!

  4. The new Goblet of Fire cover. WANT. Yeah, it won't ever replace the originals, but it's still exciting to see what artists can come up with for such a brilliant series as this! The Bloomsbury Adult covers remind me of Agatha Christie's books, for some reason. I still like them, but prefer Scholastic's one better.

  5. Happy Canada Day! I love the POA cover. It's so different than the current UK and US covers for POA. Nice to see a different take.

  6. I would love to buy all the editions too. It's great seeing the different ones. I think the fifteenth anniversary covers are awesome! I really want Prisoner of Azkaban because it's my favorite book. :)

  7. I was so hesitant to say that I loved them because the original covers hold such a special place in my heart (as I'm sure you understand), but I really, really do love them. The GoF one is to DIE for! I'm not a big fan of the UK Adult versions, but they're always a bit more blah, right? Thanks for sharing, Aylee!

  8. I still love the originals more but these are beautiful.

Those UK covers are....bright. I was blinded at first but now I can see there is artwork. Not sure about those.

  10. I'm back and a Happy Canada Day, Aylee! I don't really like the UK versions but I love the new US ones. I didn't even notice Past Harry in the background! Clearly you have a much better eye than me :)

  11. I actually really like the new UK adult versions. They are really pretty. Of course, the scholastic ones are awesome too. One day when I'm rich, I would also love to have every edition!

  12. Not a fan of the UK Adult Versions at all. I am loving the new US covers though. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix looks phenomenal. Until I saw it The Prisoner of Azkaban was my favorite.

  13. Oh, my godness, I love them all. I adore the US Goblet of Fire cover, and I can't believe it's been 15 years since Prisoner of Azkaban came out. 15 years! God, I'm old.
I'm still missing these in English (I have only the last one in both langauges, the rest are in my language only) so I'm tempted to get these to complete my collection. So gorgeous.

  15. When I first saw tweets about this, I was like, "YOU'RE KIDDING! THIS IS A JOKE!" And then I saw the covers and I knew it was real. I can't believe they're recreating the covers! I'll ALWAYS love the former covers the best, but I'm definitely liking these new ones. Like you said, I'm loving the detail and animation. "I think they've done an excellent job so far at choosing the perfect scene to represent each book for the new covers." <--YES! THIS. EXACTLY.

Thanks so much for sharing, Aylee!

  16. OMG OMG OMG SO EPIC. I'm so freaking in LOOOVE with these new covers! And the UK editions aren't too special, but I can see them being real pretty on a shelf since they are so colorful! Don't we all wish we were rich and could buy alll the editions? ;D Thanks for sharing this drool-worthy post, Aylee!

  17. I love the oder of the phoenix. the other ones are not so good if you ask me. But with harry potter I have a feeling that they will never get the covers just right because we all have our own ideas and images that we love from harry potter.

  18. I think the originals will always be the "real" covers to me, but I can really see these covers appealing to my boys. I love all the redesigns!

  19. Sigh, yeah - if only I was rich I'd have ALL THE EDITIONS too!! I can't believe how fast the covers for GoF & OotP came out! All of these are stunning but I kind of wish they'd chosen a scene from the Riddle graveyard for GoF...but I guess that would have been spoiler-y for some hold-outs *eyes hold-outs* I think my favorite out of all these new covers is still PoA though, but that might be because that book is a favorite out of the series (other than HBP & the obvious DH ♥) - plus that scene they chose is so EPIC. I actually just saw the new OotP this morning and I have to say it rocks pretty hard :D Love these posts Aylee, thanks for sharing!

  20. Ooh I love the new artwork! I'm always going to have a soft spot for the Mary Grandpre covers, but these are too lovely to pass up! I'm not a huge fan of the adult UK covers though. I don't know why they always have to make them more abstract and boring. Ah well, it happens so often it must work. I'm fine reading my books with the gorgeous kiddie covers!

  21. I've come to the conclusion that I want every single Harry Potter edition ever. They're all gorgeous. I thought at first I wasn't a fan of them being redesigned, but I have changed my mind. I LOVE the fact that the artist is consciously choosing pivotal scenes from each book to illustrate; that's how all cover designs should be done, in my opinion. My favorite thus far is definitely the Prisoner of Azkaban. :)
Those UK adult editions are also really cool.

  22. The new kid covers rock! I love them. The adult cover, uh not so much, they are kind of dull and boring with the exception of color.

  23. Not bad but I think I like the black hard cover box sets better, or the cloth bound ones that are plain covers.

  24. I LOVE LOVE LOVE these covers! Well, I love anything Harry Potter, but yes, these are magical. Thank you for sharing, Aylee. ♥

  25. Loving these covers! So interesting to see these scenes, although that's not how I pictured the Hungarian Horntail. Can't wait to see the next ones!
