This week, I've chosen to feature a few picks from the Hachette Summer 2013 Catalog:
Seventeen-year-old Icie's parents have given her $10,000 in cash, a map of a top-secret bunker, and instructions to get there by any means necessary. They have news of an imminent viral attack and know that the bunker is Icie's only hope for survival. Along with three other teens, she lives locked away for months, not knowing what's happening in the outside world or who has survived. And are they safe in the bunker after all?
Generations in the future, a mysterious cult worships the very mountain where Icie's secret bunker was built. They never leave the mountain, they're ruled by a teenager...and they have surprising ties to Icie.
This high-stakes, original, and thought-provoking adventure from Sara Grant follows two unlikely heroes, hundreds of years apart, as they fight to survive.

I love the idea that Half Lives has two different stories that are connected but take place hundreds of years apart. I'm definitely intrigued at this original premise!
Today is Leonard Peacock's birthday. It is also the day he hides a gun in his backpack. Because today is the day he will kill his former best friend, and then himself, with his grandfather's P-38 pistol.
But first he must say good-bye to the four people who matter most to him: his Humphrey Bogart-obsessed next-door neighbor, Walt; his classmate Baback, a violin virtuoso; Lauren, the Christian homeschooler he has a crush on; and Herr Silverman, who teaches the high school's class on the Holocaust. Speaking to each in turn, Leonard slowly reveals his secrets as the hours tick by and the moment of truth approaches.
In this riveting book, acclaimed author Matthew Quick unflinchingly examines the impossible choices that must be made—and the light in us all that never goes out.

The premise of Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock reminds me of Thirteen Reasons Why (which I admit I haven't actually read yet). I think it has the potential to be a truly inspired story!
Coldtown was dangerous, Tana knew. A glamorous cage, a prison for the damned and anyone who wanted to party with them.
Tana lived in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown's gates, you can never leave.
One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.

I do think I am a bit overexposed to vampires in fiction, but I am hoping The Coldest Girl in Coldtown will bring something new and original. I know I have complete faith in Holly Black's writing talent, at least!
Ooh I like the sound of Half Lives! I agree, the two-part storyline thing going on does sound super interesting. And Holly Black's new book does seem intriguing, even I it is about vampires. Who knows, maybe Holly Black has something totally awesome and unexpected up her sleeve? Anyhow, great picks, Aylee! Thanks for sharing, as always. :)
ReplyDeleteWow, Half Lives sounds crazy! I also cannot wait for the new Holly Black book... she's an amazing author and I can't wait to see what she does with this plot. Great picks!

My Wow
Oh wow these all sound AMAZING! I love the idea behind Half Life and the whole survival aspect. Survival stories, if done right, are fantastic. Forgive Me also sounds so good. And by Matthew Quick too! And of course Holly Black's new book sounds phenomenal. I still haven't read her Curse Workers series. I know, so bad of me, but I will get around to it eventually! Thanks for putting these on my radar Aylee! :D
ReplyDeleteHalf Lives sounds intriguing.
ReplyDeleteI have come across book two and three before, but this is my first time hearing about Half Lives -- and I'm totally intrigued. Thanks for spotlighting it!
ReplyDeleteMy WoW, and there's also a 100 Followers Giveaway running on my blog
Half Life sounds really intriguing, though I'm not sure if I wanna read it. Sounds dystopian, and I'm picky in that genre. Thanks for sharing though :)

I'm unsure about Half Lives! It sounds really good, but I couldn't get into Dark Parties by this author. Hopefully this one will work for me better. :) I really like the look of Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock. The cover is great and the synopsis has me intrigued. Holly Black's book has been on my radar for a while! I can't wait to read it. Awesome picks, Aylee. :)

I'm really curious about Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock, and Half Lives sounds intriguing too! I'm sure that Holly Black's newest will be amazing as well.
ReplyDeleteFabulous choices, Aylee!
Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock SOUNDS SO GOOD. I think it would give us a good insight into how the minds of "psycho killers" work. And I'm definitely looking forward to the other two - especially Half Lives! Thanks for sharing, Aylee. :) Adding FMLP to my to-read pile!
ReplyDeleteI haven't looked at the catalog yet - need to look it up
ReplyDeleteHere's my WoW
Out of the three I think Half Lives looks the most interesting. I'll definitely be checking that one out

Oh yes, as usual your WoW picks deliver Aylee!! I'd never heard of Half Lives but I will definitely be adding it to my to-read shelf soon. It sounds really fresh & I too like the idea of two stories separated by years but still connected and told simultaneously! Forgive Me Leonard Peacock is a bit out of my comfort zone but that synopsis really draws you in doesn't it...I want to hear Leonard's story and I love the mention of 'the light inside us that never goes out'...♥ I think I may wait to read a few reviews but I'm definitely curious. Coldest Girl in Coldtown I'd seen around but hadn't paid much attention to till now. It sounds quite promising and even though I haven't read anything by Holly Black yet (I want too though) this does sound like a fresh take on the whole Vamp genre! Thanks for sharing all these upcoming goodies :D
ReplyDeleteAll sound intriguing, enjoy!

ReplyDeleteI've actually heard of Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock. It's one I want to read too. Sounds very intense and emotional, but I love books like that. It does sound a bit like Thirteen Reasons Why...I loved that book.
ReplyDeleteThe coldest girl is coldtown sounds very good! And I also like the concept of Half Lives :) Great picks!
ReplyDeleteMel@thedailyprophecy.
I agree - having two connected stories hundreds of years apart sounds so cool! I'm noticing after visiting a few WoWs this trend of hands on covers….very interesting. I think the Coldest Girl in Coldtown could be pretty good. I've heard Holy Black is good but I haven't read any of her books yet. Love you picks as always!

All of these sound great. Especially Forgive Me.
ReplyDeleteWow! All of these sound fantastic! I have actually been lusting after Forgive Me for a few months, and I seriously cannot wait for August. Half Lives and the Coldest Girl in Coldtown look amazing as well! Definitely adding them to my TBR list! Thanks Aylee! :D
ReplyDeleteForgive Me, Leonard Peacock sounds intense and amazing. I'm looking forward to both The Coldest Girl in Cold Town and Half Lives. Awesome list this week :)
ReplyDeleteI'm probably most excited about The Coldest Girl in Coldtown since Holly Black's writing is the only one I'm familiar with.
ReplyDeleteI'm so, so, so excited for The Coldest Girl in Coldtown Aylee! I actually haven't read anything by Holly Black (I know, I fail), so I'm dying to finally get my hands on something she's written! I've heard such great things about her White Cat series!
ReplyDeleteOoh these look amazing, especially Coldest Girl and Half Lives! Great choices :-)
ReplyDeleteHalf Lives looks SO GOOD! Wow. Thanks for sharing that one -- I'm definitely going to check that out. Also, I love me some Holly Black. Can't wait for this new one. Great picks! :)
ReplyDeleteMy WoW
These books all sound very original and intense.
ReplyDeleteI think the one I would be more likely to read is the Leonard Peacock one, it does sound a bit like 13 Reasons Why but with a ticking clock to keep the tension going.
Thanks, I've not heard of any of these. I need to read something by Holly Black. I hear she's great. Maybe The Coldest Girl in Coldtown may be a good place to start. Of the three books, I think Half Lives is my favorite. How intruiging!!! The 2nd book is contemporary and I do agree it sounds like 13 Reasons Why. I read and enjoyed that one, so I think I'll add #2 to my list also as potential contemps I should enjoy. Do you have any copies of these? I hope you are going to review a few.. :-)
