Waiting On Wednesday: Random House Spring 2013 Catalog

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill of Breaking The Spine in which an upcoming, eagerly anticipated release is highlighted on the blog.

This week, I've chosen to feature a few picks from the Random House Spring 2013 Catalog:

The Flame in the Mist by Kit Grindstaff
Date: April 9, 2013
Add to Goodreads

Set in an imagined past, this dark fantasy-adventure is for fans of Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass. Features  Jemma, a fiery-headed heroine held captive in Agromond Castle, yet destined to save mist-shrouded Anglavia.
Fiery-headed Jemma Agromond is not who she thinks she is, and when the secrets and lies behind her life at mist-shrouded Agromond Castle begin to unravel, she finds herself in a chilling race for her life. Ghosts and misfits, a stone and crystals, a mysterious book, an ancient prophecy—all these reveal the truth about Jemma's past and a destiny far greater and more dangerous than she could have imagined in her wildest fantasies. With her telepathic golden rats, Noodle and Pie, and her trusted friend, Digby, Jemma navigates increasingly dark forces, as helpers both seen and unseen, gather. But in the end, it is her own powers that she must bring to light, for only she has the key to defeating the evil ones and fulfilling the prophecy that will bring back the sun and restore peace in Anglavia.

I'm all for a high fantasy middle grade read that is recommended for fans of The Golden Compass. Besides, telepathic golden rats?! I NEED to see what that's all about so I've decided I must read The Flame in the Mist.

It was bizarre and inexplicable, and after it happened, Ingrid Waverly was forced to leave her life in London behind. She had to trade a world full of fancy dresses and society events for exile in gothic Paris with her mother and her younger sister, Gabby.
In Paris there are no grand balls or glittering parties, and disturbingly, the house rented by Ingrid's twin brother, Grayson, isn't a house at all. It's an abbey. A creepy, old abbey with a roof lined in stone gargoyles that could almost be mistaken for living, breathing creatures.
And to top it all off, Grayson is missing.
Yet no one seems to be concerned about Grayson's whereabouts save for Luc, a devastatingly handsome servant who has some deep and dark secrets of his own.
There's one secret about the city that even Luc can't keep hidden, though: there's a murderer on the loose. And every day that Grayson is missing means there's less chance he's still alive.
Ingrid is sure her twin isn't dead—she can feel it deep in her soul—but she knows that he's in grave danger, and that it's up to her and Gabby to find him before all hope is lost.
And yet the path to him is more dangerous than she could ever imagine.

The Beautiful and the Cursed is described as a "wholly original interpretation of gargoyle lore." And I'm sold right there because I'm pretty sure I've never read ANY book that has had gargoyle lore and that is something I would like to become familiar with.

The Pirate's Wish by Cassandra Rose Clarke

After setting out to break the curse that binds them together, the pirate Ananna and the assassin Naji find themselves stranded on an enchanted island in the north with nothing but a sword, their wits, and the secret to breaking the curse: complete three impossible tasks. With the help of their friend Marjani and a rather unusual ally, Ananna and Naji make their way south again, seeking what seems to be beyond their reach.
Unfortunately, Naji has enemies from the shadowy world known as the Mists, and Ananna must still face the repercussions of going up against the Pirate Confederation. Together, Naji and Ananna must break the curse, escape their enemies — and come to terms with their growing romantic attraction.

I've been eagerly anticipating The Pirate's Wish after reading and LOVING its predecessor, The Assassin's Curse. I swear though, if Naji doesn't FINALLY admit his feelings for Ananna in this book, Ms. Clarke will have to answer to one very frustrated Aylee.

Far Far Away by Tom McNeal

It says quite a lot about Jeremy Johnson Johnson that the strangest thing about him isn't even the fact his mother and father both had the same last name. Jeremy once admitted he's able to hear voices, and the townspeople of Never Better have treated him like an outsider since. After his mother left, his father became a recluse, and it's been up to Jeremy to support the family. But it hasn't been up to Jeremy alone. The truth is, Jeremy can hear voices. Or, specifically, one voice: the voice of the ghost of Jacob Grimm, one half of the infamous writing duo, The Brothers Grimm. Jacob watches over Jeremy, protecting him from an unknown dark evil whispered about in the space between this world and the next. But when the provocative local girl Ginger Boultinghouse takes an interest in Jeremy (and his unique abilities), a grim chain of events is put into motion. And as anyone familiar with the Grimm Brothers know, not all fairy tales have happy endings. . .

I am SO loving that Far Far Away's MC hears the voice of Jacob Grimm in his head. I wonder what that could be about? I'm intrigued to say the least!

How about you? Are you waiting on any of these Random House Spring 2013 reads? Are there any upcoming books from the Random House Spring 2013 Catalog that I didn't include here that you feel I should add to my list?

  4. I've either dumped a couple of these on my wishlist and totally forgotten about them or just haven't looked through Random's House catalog enough :) I haven't heard of Far Far Away, but I love that Jeremy can hear Jacob Grimm in his head. I'm going to wait on the reviews for that one.

  5. Ms Clarke will have to answer to a very frustrated Sam, too. ;) I really hope Naji and Ananna will draw closer in the sequel! I loved the first book. :) The Beautiful and the Cursed is one I'm really looking forward to as well. It sounds fantastic, though I remember reading something about a love triangle, which has put me off a little. Though I hope I have that wrong! Great picks, Aylee. :)
